The principals of an Application Service Provider (ASP) startup company had the market experience and expertise to develop an online education service, which could save multi-national corporations millions of dollars in training costs. What they didn't have was the Internet Systems Engineering knowledge of how to build such a system.
Knowing that they would need a team of system architects, software engineers, database administrators and graphic designers to implement their vision, the startup was faced with a difficult choice: raise money to hire an engineering staff, thus giving up a substantial portion of their equity, or outsource their IT department.
Deciding that it would be best to establish a market for their service before seeking funding, the company selected WaterWare to provide all the services of a startup engineering department.
Knowing that resources were limited, WaterWare developed a two-tiered application architecture using JavaServer Pages that would allow for modular implementation of new feature sets. This design allowed the company to roll out a fully functional application to its early customers, while saving substantially in development costs.
As the service continues to grow, new features are continually being added as they are needed. After two years, WaterWare continues to provide development and hosting services to a successful ASP that survived the dot-com bubble-bust cycle.
